WinRAR is a 32-bit Windows version of RAR Archiver, the powerful archiver and archive manager. The developer of WinRAR claims it allows higher compression ratios than other archiving tools, especially on executable files, object libraries, and large text files. Testing on a variety of file types showed compression rates 10-15% better than on identically created ZIP files. WinRAR also offers a compression algorithm highly optimized for multimedia data. Included in this package are both Windows RAR graphical interfaces and a command-line program. They allow you to manage non-WinRAR archives (such as .arj and .lzh formats, if you have those archivers on your system, and .cab and .zip files directly through WinRAR), letting you update, transform to self-extracting archives, or add and erase comments. WinRAR also features six compression levels, multiple volume archives, password-protected archives, repair of physically damaged archives, and support for authenticity and update information. Although WinRAR is not as popular as other archivers, it offers some advantages and is worth checking out.
WinRAR features:
- WinRAR GUI runs on Windows 9x/ME/NT/2000/XP and is available in many languages, Rar command-line (console mode) versions run on Linux, DOS, OS/2 and various flavours of Unix.
- WinRAR introduces an original compression algorithm. It allows higher compression ratios than other PC archiving tools, especially on executable files, Object libraries, large text files, etc.
- WinRAR offers optional, compression algorithms highly optimized for multimedia, text and other data forms.
- WinRAR supports files and archives up to 8,589 BILLION GIGABYTES in size The number of archived files is, for all practical purposes, unlimited.
- WinRAR provides support for ISO9660 volumes. These are CD-ROM images whihc WinRAR can browse and unpack.
- WinRAR offers new facilities and features such as a graphic interactive interface utilizing mouse and menus as well as the command line interface.
- WinRAR provides functionality for creating a 'solid' archives which can raise the compression ratio by 10% - 50% over more common methods, particularly when packing large numbers of small files.
- WinRAR offers the ability to create and change SFX archives using default and external SFX modules.
- WinRAR offers the ability to create a multi-volume archive as SFX.
- WinRAR offers a number of service functions, such as setting a password, adding archive and file comments. Even physically damaged archives may be repaired and an archive may be locked to prevent further changes. Authenticity information may be added for additional security and WinRAR will store information on the last update and name of the archive.
- WinRAR provides ANSI esc-sequence support in comments. This allows color comments and other ANSI features without the need for an ANSI-driver.

This is a text-version only. The text file that comes up are command prompts to enter when dragging a folder to be "rared". Not for the faint of computer heart. Sorry, no GUI interface for the Mac...yet.
