LimeWire™ is a software package which enables individuals to search for and share computer files with anyone on the internet. A product of Lime Wire, LLC, LimeWire™ is compatible with the Gnutella file-sharing protocol and can connect with anyone else running Gnutella-compatible software. Limewire is written in Java, and will run on any machine with an internet connection and the ability to run Java version 1.1.8. The current version of LimeWire™ brings unprecedented functionality and ease of use to the Gnutella network. In addition, it does more than any other software to improve and maintain the health of the Gnutella Network as a whole:

I wanted to try out limewire since I didn't want to pay for music for my ipod. At first I loved it it was fast, reliable and all that jazz. But later on it sucked. It got slower and each song took at least 10 minutes to load. Then it happened, my computer got the largest virus of the century and I had a pop up which said that limewire has been uninstalled because of the viruses it was causing. limewire is one of the most unsafest music downloading programs. The older you computer is the faster you will get the virus. Don't use it!

it isnt the best program for finding less mainstream music, or even for downloading movies, but for popular music its the mutz nutz. ive been using the free version and ive had downloads upto 270kb/s which is pretty much my max download rate available on my current bandwidth so i see no reason to upgrade to the Pro edition at all

I remember when Napster was alive and well (before it's
makeover). My file transfers on Napster were insanely fast via
ADSL, all from a single user.
Now, we have other p2p programs such as Kazaa, WinMX,
Limewire, eDonkey, etc. These modern p2p apps utilize multi-
source downloads. Which would make it seem faster, right?
Wrong!
I haven't had a fast file transfer in a long while. And my
transfers are now always interupted. It can sometimes take and
entire day to download a 5MB file. I still have ADSL to this day
and it's really fast with everything else I use on the net. But
Limewire is so rediculously slow. I get excited now when
Limewire breaks the 15KB/s barrier. The fastest transfer I've
had on Limewire ran at around 60KB/s. That was a one time
deal. Oh yeah, and I have Limewire Pro. They advertise that
you'll get faster data transfers. But you don't. Just stick with the
free one.
Oh, and one more thing... Yes, I do set my prefs up to only
search for users with a DSL or higher connection. And I normally
always connect to someone with at least a T1, unless I'm
desperate.
